Synopsis
" Neither defiant nor resigned, he cheerfully conducts his family business while his fellow Sikhs either leave the impoverished nation for better pastures, or simply pass away. He has no interest in leaving. “I like it here,” he admits.
His grown son is headed to join his young bride in the bustling metropolis of London, but he expresses at least token interest in returning to Malawi to take over his father’s business. This sensitively told, melancholy tale makes it clear: despite what he says, the son will not be returning. His future lies in the West.
In terms of the disappearing Sikh diaspora in Malawi, his father is already the last man standing.
